Remodeling your home doesn't need to be a nightmare.
With 5 easy steps you can ensure that everything runs smoothly and
efficiently.
1. Proper Budgeting Make sure that you start your
remodeling project all the financial facts. And that means EVERTHING!
No matter how great your plan is, it will always fall short if you
run out of cash.
2. Timing Make sure that you have left enough
time between subcontractors to allow you to review their work and
to ensure that you have given enough time should an unforeseen event
take place and delay a subcontractor. A delay in one task, will
only cause the rest to fall behind.
3. Hiring Right When hiring your contractor be
sure to take your time. A good contractor will ensure that everything
runs as smoothly as possibly, but a bad one will only leaving you
regretting your choice, and probably having to pay out more moony
then you originally intended.
4. Knowing Your Objective Be sure to keep your
objectives in mind when remodeling your home. If you are planning
to stay in your house forever, then spend a little more on your
appliances and finishes, as this will save you time and money in
the long run.
5. Contracts and Permits You should have a written
contract or estimate, on small jobs, before any work is done. Contracts
are there to protect you and should spell out the contractors name,
address (not a P.O. Box), responsibilities, costs, timing, payment
options, warranties, etc.
Don't forget the following either before you
start remodeling:
- On larger projects, make arrangements to have a garbage dumpster
at the job site. Most building departments will require it and
waste haulers typically will not allow construction debris to
be added to the regular garbage pickup.
- Make sure insurance coverage is in place.
- Verify that all supplies have been ordered and are in stock.
- Notify neighbors who will be affected by the noise, traffic
or other inconveniences of remodeling.
- Make arrangements for small children or pets so they are not
in the middle of the construction.
- Establish periodic project review sessions to determine the
status of the project.
- Relax. Enjoy your old kitchen while you still have running water
or go for one last hot shower in your tiny bathroom. Enjoy the
peace while you still have it.
